a conveyor belt full of love
when october books, a small bookshop in southampton, england, was moving to a new location down the street, it faced a problem. how could it move its tons of books to the new place, without spending a lot of money or closing down for long?
the shop came up with a clever solution: they put out a call for volunteers to act as a human conveyor belt.
as they prepared to move on the last sunday of this past october, they expected perhaps 100 people to help.
"but on the day, over 200 people turned out. it was a great sight," amy brown, one of the shop's part-time staff members said.
shoulder to shoulder, community members formed a line 500 feet long: from the old shop, down the sidewalk, and onto the shop floor of the new store.
and in just one hour, they passed more than 2,000 books, hand to hand, to the new shop.
"we had elderly people, children, and everybody in between," brown said.
october books opened in 1977. and it has lots of devoted customers. under the pressure of the rising rent the owners created a crowdfunding page for $400,000 in hopes of buying an old bank building. hundreds of people offered donations and loans. then when the shop moved, people came to help again.
"it was surprising and positive, and just a really moving experience to see so many people help us," brown said.
now the bookshop has reopened. its new chapter must be a bright one since it holds many people's love. don't you think so?
